Is Jesus Your Treasure?

How is Jesus to be loved by us? The answer to the question may be simple but the answer played out in life is not often found. Simply put, Jesus is to be our treasure. Merely having an acknowledging belief of Christ is not enough. We are to cherish, adore, love, and be absolutely in awe of him. We are to have a willingness within us that says I will give up everything so that I can be closer to Christ.

The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and covered up. Then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field (Matthew 13:44).

In this parable Jesus depicts to us a man who found a great treasure in a field and deeply wanted that treasure. He wanted that treasure so much so that he was willing to sell every possession he had just to buy the field and have this treasure.  This too is to be our desire; that we would willingly rid ourselves of all earthly pride and possessions so that we can be in the Kingdom with Jesus. Oh, that we would desire Christ!

As I close, I am not saying that we all must go and get rid of everything we own. But I am asking, is Christ our greatest possession? Does he surpass all that we might gain here on this earth? Can we say with Paul, “But whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ. Indeed, I counted everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord” (Philippians 3:7-8). Is Jesus our treasure?
