The Coffee Revolt

In opening up our Grindhouse Cafe and generally adjusting the way we do things in the new place, we decided to eliminate the free-will donation coffee that we have offered for years. It just made sense to me on a number of levels. I like tying up loose ends.

“People won’t miss it.” I thought. “A few might struggle not having their Folgers available, but they’ll adjust.” I said to myself.

Boy, was I wrong! Shortly after the news of ‘No Folgers for you’ was out, they were outside of the church with pitchforks and lanterns and clubs demanding the Coffee Nazi’s hide.

OK, so I am exaggerating…..but being the wise and prudent man that I am (and not wanting to take a beating if I don’t have to), I caved to the demands of the revolting villagers. Those jonesing for Folgers will get their fix this weekend and subsequent weekends until the Lord returns. Now, drop those pitchforks…..g

The Grindhouse is awesome !! I love the praise and reading at 8:00 in the morning although i have only been twice it is a great way to start your day.

As more people come to lighthouse to get coffee, maybe the Grindhouse will stay open later than 1;00. I came in to get coffee about 2:00 but had no luck, with my heavy work load i need to keep my cafein levels up. as Clay would say aahhrr, aahhrr.
Anyhew, The Grind House is an awesome place to meet at any time. The lord has given us one heck of a church. He must be very happy with lighthouse.

  20. Lynn on December 14th, 2008 10:43 pm

I know I should blog this one on sects cause it has nothing to do with coffee but here’s one for you, from Ruth Smythers, wife of the Reverend L. D. Smythers, wrote the following in 1894:

To the sensitive young woman who has had the benefits of proper upbringing, the wedding day is ironically, both the happiest and most terrifying day of her life. On the positive side, there is the wedding itself, in which the bride is the central attraction in a beautful and inspiring ceremony, symbolizing her triumph in securing a male to provide for all her needs for the rest of her life. On the negative side, there is the wedding night, during which the bride must “pay the piper,” so to speak, by facing for the first time the terrible experience of sex.

  21. Lynn on December 14th, 2008 10:46 pm

At this point, dear reader, let me concede one shocking truth. Some young women actually anticipate the wedding night ordeal with curiosity and pleasure! Beware such an attitude! A selfish and sensual husband can easily take advantage of such a bride. One cardinal rule of marriage should never be forgotten: GIVE LITTLE, GIVE SELDOM, AND ABOVE ALL, GIVE GRUDGINGLY. Otherwive what could have been a proper marriage could become an orgy of sexual lust.

  22. Lynn on December 14th, 2008 10:51 pm

Mrs. Smyther’s goes on to say:

On the other hand, the bride’s terror need not be extreme. While sex is at best revolting and at worst rather painful, it has to be endured, and has been by women since the beginning of time, and is compensated for by the monogamous home and by the children produced through it.
It is useless, in most cases, for the bride to prevail upon the groom to forego the sexual initiation. While the ideal husband would be one who would approach his bride only at her request, and only for the purpose of begetting offspring, such nobility and unselfishness cannot be expected from the average man.

  23. Lynn on December 14th, 2008 10:54 pm

Most men, if not denied, would demand sex almost every day. the wise bride will permit a maximum of two brief sexual experiense weekly during the first months of marriage. As time goes by she should make every effort to reduce this frequency. Feigned illness, sleepiness, and headaches are among the wife’s best friends in this mattter. Arguments, nagging, scolding and bickering also prove very effective if used in the late evening about one hour before the husband would normally commence his seduction.

  24. Lynn on December 14th, 2008 11:03 pm

Clever wives are on the alert for new and better methods of denying and discouraging the amorous overtures of the husband. A good wife should expect to have reduced sexual contacts to once a week by the end of the first year of mariage and to once a month by the end of the fifth year of marriage. By their tenth anniversary many wives have managed to complete their child bearing and have achieved the ultimate goal of terminatinag all sexual contacts with the husband. By this time, she can depend upon his love for the children and social pressures to hold the husband in the home.

Quoted from ‘Instruction and advice for the young bride on the conduct and procedure of the intimate and personal relationships of the marriage state for the greater spiritual sanctity of the blessed sacrament and the glory of God. by Ruth Smythers.

no glory there. Just wanted to share, it came from Feminie Appeal written by Carolyn Mahaney. It’s a good book ladies.

  25. Bruce Hatfield on December 14th, 2008 11:38 pm

Who on earth would have guessed? It started out so innocently! Pastor Greg turns the coffee off for one Sunday and they storm the castle with pitchforks and torches…I would not rest assured that there may have been a rope or two under some of them overcoats too!

And now this; someone has written a book of how to ruin a beautiful marriage. I think that this Carolyn Mahaney should come to the Lighthouse! She missed the message last Sunday night and the refresher course this morning but we still have the Podcast! You should send her a CD Lynn.

  26. Bruce Hatfield on December 14th, 2008 11:43 pm

Sorry, I just looked again at the first part, you should send a copy to Ruth Smythers also. It looks like she is stiring the pot.

  35. Keith on December 16th, 2008 9:19 pm

I think lighthouse needs to go big with some local advertising for christian bloggers.
Maybe mention it in church sermons on a regular basis or have some kind of blogging function to where people would try it and then take an interest.
lighthousecf.org could be a great daily activity for people in search of a better christian life.
Maybe an ask and answer page, or an advice page.
Keep the youth or your kids on a christian site. Put some games to occupy there time in a safe place. Have chess tournaments or something. I heard in the olden days kings played chess to determine wisdom.
A catchy advertising slogan for the site maybe.
Now i feel like E.F. Hutton.

  65. Brandon on December 29th, 2008 2:03 pm

Since we’re talking about random topics, does anybody know pastor greg’s guitar setup? Amp/Pedals?

  66. Greg Fadness on December 29th, 2008 2:39 pm

    Hey Brandon,
I mainly use a 65amps London for my amp. On my pedal board I’ve got a number of overdrives–Fulltone OCD, LovePedal COT, Boss Bluesdriver w/Keeley mod (Edge’s main pedal). I’ve also currently have a TC reverb pedal; an Eventide delay pedal; a Fulltone vibrato pedal and a Crybaby Wah. My pedalboard is pretty crowded at the moment…..g

  68. PUMBA on December 29th, 2008 9:09 pm

    Think i’d break a string.

  70. Susan on December 30th, 2008 3:15 am

    Greg…. was that a… pounce?

  71. Brandon on December 30th, 2008 8:06 am

That’s a beautiful setup Pastor Greg! I’ve always struggled with the many-stomp-boxes vs multi-FX box. The multi-effect box in general is the cheaper option, but the customizing ability and overall quality is usually less. I rock out with a floorPOD for now, but I’ve been eyeing whether to spend a little money into a small stomp box setup, or go all out for a more mondo PODxt Live option. The one thing I like about the POD’s are the ability to choose amp/cab models, which with minor amounts of tweaking, can sound suprisingly pretty close to your actual amp models. As much as I’d like to pay $2.5k for a Marshall JCM800 2203 Vintage Series 100W Tube Head, I’ll prefer the pod version! Haha, plus I need to stop spending all my money on snowboarding so I can afford a bit more decent guitar setup. Decisions decisions!

  72. Greg Fadness on December 30th, 2008 9:08 am

Guitar language is another language in and of itself and yes, it is not often that someone asks about guitar gear. To most people that stuff is as exciting as watching the paint dry. So I indeed pounced….;)

  73. Brandon on December 30th, 2008 9:50 am

Watching paint dry – must be a government job. Haha nah I’ve been wanting to find out for a long time but never had the opportunity to ask, so I thought I’d throw it out on the blog – glad I did. You play with some nice clean sounds so I’ve been itching to ask for awhile. You ripped out a solo a few Sunday’s back and it was one of the first time’s I’ve heard you really utilize your Crybaby Wah – it was great! It sounded layered with your Boss Bluesdriver and a light digital delay on your Eventide Timefactor that really made it ring. I was loving it!

  74. Rene' Turner on December 30th, 2008 9:55 am

I have to admit, at first I was a little shook up by not having coffee but not so much that I would have pitchforked you! ? I’m glad it’s back. Thanks Pastor

  75. Christa on December 30th, 2008 3:25 pm

Oh my I am completely lost, that is another language, I’m impressed (I think.) I know at the very least I am certainly impressed by the talent. Greg, it is fun to watch you just rock out sometimes…

And yes, we’re all happy to have the coffee back too. I feel like it’s a great ministry. I think people are happy to pay for specialty coffees but some want to just kick back after church with a cup o’ joe and fellowship together. So, hooray, and thanks for bringing it back.
