What’s On Your Ipod?
Currently dominating my ipod is a girl from New Zealand called ‘Brooke Fraser’. ‘Albertine’ is a brilliant album filled with challenging themes and Brooke’s stunning vocals. She can be found at the iTunes store.
Anyone care to share what’s dominating your iPod (or zune, or cd player, cassette deck, 8-track, etc)?

I’ve heard Brooke Fraser. She is amazing!
As far as my music (unfortunately no ipod yet), I listen to alot of Hillsong worship via the internet. But I’ve recently rediscovered a jazz vocalist named Kurt Elling. Greg, are you much into the jazz scene?
I love pretty much all genres. I have a lot of jazz in my collection. Don’t think I have any Kurt Elling though. I’ll have to check him out. Thanks, Deanna!

I love instrumental stuff. I dig Yngwie Malmsteens Rising Force and could listen to it over and over. Joe Satriani and Eric Johnson are great to. I sure miss the great guitar solos of the 80s. Anything you can recommend in that genre? I must confess I love Neil Diamond and John Denver too. Songs from the Lighthouse is a great album and I am always anxious for the next Casting Crowns release. This is a little off topic but I am also looking for a Christian band in need of a vocalist. Cover tunes and original music are ok. I play some guitar and have my own guitar stuff but would rather sing. If you know of anyone, young or old, any skill level, who just wants to praise God with what He has given us, let me know. Thanks and keep those I-Pods fresh!
Coldplay – Viva La Vida. Their best album yet. They branch out quite a bit on this one.
Foo Fighters – Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace.
Future of Forestry – Twilight.
Brad Paisley. Listen to him rip on that guitar!
hey Greg, lots of stuff goes through my ipod, everything from Mozart to guns N Roses, to John Coltrane, but right now The Red Airplanes. oh yeah if you want some Kurt Elling, i can hook you up. he is amazing
My son and I share a computer and the same iTunes account so I get to listen to everything that is on his iPod as well as what I would like on mine. As he has not chosen to listen to many of the classical tunes or some of the teaching programs I have downloaded, he does have some pretty good taste and enjoys much of the contemporary Christian music I love like Third Day and the David Crowder band.
My range is more from the contemporary praise and worship of, Aaron Shust to the Waiting to more of a teaching format with Pastor Greg, Pastor Danny in Seattle and the Perimeter Church in Michigan. My son has entered an interesting genre that ranges from the All American rejects to Yellowcard and even a podcast that he enjoys, Adventures in Odyssey.
I try to listen to as much of it as I can but I am up to nearly 1500 entries! My wife is glad that she only has to have a 4Gig iPod so that she only has to download what she likes. Hers if full of Building 429 and Third Day.
Complete albums: 3rd Day, WOW, Salvador, Keith Green, Wes King, Steve Camp, Terry Clark, Lighthouse, 60’s surfing instrumentals, Creedence, Beatles, Don Edwards (cowboy – which is not C&W), Simon & Garfunkel. Mixed artists singles from 50’s, 60’s,70’s rock n roll, 60’s Motown, 60’s – 80’s C&W, Complete Insrumental albums (Herb Alpert – progressive jazz, Beatles on acoustic quitar, 101 strings, soundtracks).
Usually on shuffle all.
Barlow Girl, Chris Tomlin, Sara Kelly, Johnny Cash, Jewel, Plain White T’s, Sara Groves, Building 429, Thousand Foot Crutch, Kutless, Mercy Me, Dixie Chicks. I don’t have my ipod with me at the moment, so I don’t remember what else is on there.
Ok, here’s a topic I can enter the the blogging fray with – I have over 8500 songs on my iPod, 60+ Christmas albums, 10 Disney Soundtracks (you should see our kids dance), and everything from Amy Grant to Take 6, Glenn Miller Orchestra to Harry Connick Jr., and Stone Temple Pilots to Joss Stone.
Christian artist recommendations: Scarlet Hope, Point of Grace, Third Day and Johnny Cash’s Gospel Collection.
Looks like we could have quite the “name that tune” contest with these contributors!
My MP3 player right now is packed with my fave Christian music. Namley, Point of Grace (Their 24 album), Mark Schultz, All of my Casting Crowns CD’s and my various artists cd’s (I Can Only Imagine, Open the Eyes of my Heart, and some from my WOW cd’s). I am always rockin out or lifting my hands to something! I get a lot of funny looks but hey, It’s worth it!
Been really enjoying listening to Danny Braga’s current series on Leadership and the Church. Also, love Casting Crowns, Jeremy Camp, Mark Shultz, Delirious, Mark Harris, Mercy Me, Sanctus Real, and one of my current favorites is Third Day. Dan and I went and saw them in concert just before Luella was born and we just really enjoyed them a lot.
Oh…. my… well, of course, LPB. casting crowns, jeremy camp, jeremy riddle, selected nate sally, jonny lang, matt mahr, the david crowder band, sanctus real, need to breathe, selected big daddy weave, of course, Yes, I love some of Brooke frasiers stuff. (check out the u-tube of Albertine…) etc etc etc lots of the current stuff… …. also some great oldies: Petra – the rock cries out – oh… some selected whiteheart, ( powerhouse CD )Matthew ward – fade to white. Degarmo & Key – addey ( isn’t this kind of a personal question? ) Rain dance from the rez band..(love it)some selected Guardian..)(yikes)… Halo – remember them, Kev??? I like “will he find faith” from bash & the code – ( is it hot in here?) and .. well, some of the eagles, journey, selected moody blues, chicago, simon & garfunkle, beatles, carly simon, boston, .. I like Diana Kraal, Five for fighthing, train, styx… any really GOOD blues.. jazz-& soul – Diverse is a good word, all over the map is a better description probably, of my musical taste. also like listening to LCF teaching & some others. i-pods are nice love to get lost in the worship… but sometimes I just need to hear the silence, too… :o) especially with pre-dawn walks and a beautiful idaho sunrise. Aaahhhhh……
I love this topic. I pay for a music subscription service for $15 a month, so I can download music all the time. The bad thing with that is my music is only rented until I quit the subscription, but the good thing is I can always try new music. I just can’t get enough and I also like a very wide variety. I really like POD, Kutless, 12 Stones, Jonah33, Toby Mac, Kirk Franklin, Third Day, Disciple, Scott Stapp, Creed and many more. I used to like Metallica and Pantera a lot, but now it reminds me of when I was so lost. I like a lot of heavy music, but I hate the way they sing now a days to it. I don’t really like the growling, but I love really fast drumming and fast guitar riffs. Music is awesome.
since when did motley crue become classic rock? i like the old stuff like geoff moore and the distance, stryper, holy soldier, but i am branching out into modern day bands such as kutless, sonic flood, fly leaf, fireflight, krystal meyers, plumb, project 86, tree 63, and right now i cant get enough of gretchen. also check out kathleen carnali. i love the power of Christ in the music. there is no place i’d rather be!!!!!!!!
I’m a podcast nerd, some of my favorites are: Fresh Air, Talk of the Nation, Coverville, Lyrics Undercover, Taproot, Marshill, A Prairie Home Companion, Relevant, and the greatest podcast ever This American Life
Clay, that shows how old we’re gettin’! ;)
our music selection is huge and diverse… ranging fron the 60’s until now…. and admittedly not all would be listened to by jesus himself…. yes im a sinner,
can i change the subject? greg did you see the q/a rick warren did with the presidential candidates? i missed it, but a friend told me about it, and it completely changed and secured her vote…. i was wanting to find it on the web and try to see it first hand but i would really like your opinion…. its gotten heated about mormonism, why not delve into obama and mccain….. ???? *smile*
we are getting closer to living on that side of the bridge!! can you hear the excitement in my voice? YAY!!!!!
heidi
Heidi,
I missed the Obama/McCain at Saddleback deal too. I heard that Rick Warren did a good job. Lots of Christians are taking shots at him for hosting such a thing at the church, but I personally don’t have a problem with it. As to the performances of Obama and McCain-it sounds like McCain hit it out of the park and Obama got a bloop single (for all you baseball fans).
I’m excited for you and Jason!
g
i agree with your opnion on Rick Warren hosting, in fact i felt it was a coup of sorts… and the way he did it, not a debate with the two hitting at each other but the same questions, comparing the two’s answers… unique and i felt it more useful for the answers we all need… i also feel, by my friend sharing me the answers of the two’s questions, that Mccain hit it out of the park… i have alot of respect for him in regard to him being a POW for 5 and 1/2 years, giving the ability to make military decisions not superficially…. and apparently he had more in depth answers for hard hitting things than Obama… maturity in a leader is important but im fearful of what this country thinks it really needs… im praying it isnt another people voting in Saul… the peoples choice…
i apologize for changing the subject on here, i just wanted your opnion and wondered if you had seen it…. thanks for commenting it!

Pastor G,
I heard a song by Brooke Fraser for the first time last night! And you are right! She is awesome! Do you know where I might be able to find one of her CD’s?
Mandie,
I downloaded ‘Albertine’ from iTunes. I’m sure her cd is available in stores….g
Has anyone heard the new song Change The Way by Aaron Shust??? by far one of my favorites!
Samantha,
I love that song and the chorus is like a prayer lifted up to Christ,
May we know Your love, feel it course through our veins
Encircling our hearts and embracing our souls
We need Your love and grace to remain
To rearrange our hearts, change the way that we praise.
My favorite on that album is still the next song… My Savior My God.
I have played it over and over so I could sing it at the top of my lungs as I drive down the freeway.
~Bruce
Christa, were not old were classic hee hee hee!
LOL! I knew you’d have some answer to keep us from feeling old, Clay. ;)
I am in the dark ages, though, I have no ipod (awwwwwwww feeling sorry for me yet?) So I can only say what is on my CD player… When I run in the mornings I have my trusty rusty cell phone radio tuned into the Effect, because I need a faster beat. But at home I usually have it on any of the other Christian stations. My husband and I love so many styles of music I couldn’t list them all. Each week I am playing classical music for a little Music Appreciation in our homeschool (my mom made me listen to it and it turns out she was right “one day you’ll thank me.” I hate when that happens. It actually makes me giggle hearing my mom’s words come out of my mouth when I tell my kids the same thing…) My favorite CDs are from Seventh Day Slumber. I do like it loud, but I also like mellower things. CDs of Gretchen, Guardian, Delirious, Plumb, DC Talk, Newsboys, you name it, sit comfortably along side several praise and worship and instrumental CDs. (yeah, I can’t afford a lot of CDs so yes they are older bands… classic I mean.) We love things like Kutless and that stuff too, just need to put it on our Christmas wish list I guess. :) And the collection of ApologetiX CDs are fun as I was raised up on lots of secular heavy metal and wanted an alternative to some of the songs I still loved but had grown to hate the words… If it’s music, we probably love it. The only time we have to draw a line, though, is with rap. Sorry, just can’t go there, lol!
Thanks, Clay, I’m gonna remember that word “classic.” :) I feel so much better…
c
well I’ve never heard of her, but I’ll deffinetly check her out. I’m a music junky to the core, so yes I dig it all. But lately I’ve been gettin back into alot of the westcoast underground hip-hop, I have been on a music treck for years trying to find solid groups of this genre that are Christian, and I’ve found quite a bit, but a couple of my favorites who I’m listening to about everyday right now is, LA Symphony, Mars Ill, and LMNO… All very good, although, lmno is very hard to come across. If you choose to dig into some classic beats and rad lyrics to bob your head to I’d suggest them, but good luck if you choose to look for lmno, he’s a tough one to come across.
Peace- Jared
Bruce-
That whole cd is amazing. I love those lines you posted. great song! More Wonderful and One Day are great songs on there as well.
christa can you download songs into your cell phone?
Umm, Clay, I am uhhh, well let’s say pretty technically challenged, so I can’t answer that, lol! But I’m doubtful that my cell phone has the capability or if it did I’d probably have to subscribe to something which I haven’t… Ya know, if someday I took the time to read that 582 page book that came with my phone, I might find it does a lot more than take calls and play a radio and a couple of mind numbing games! LOL!! It’s a thought…
c
Social D, David B, Johhny C, Elvis P and Pastor G!
confessions of an LCF pastor
Christa dont worry about the 582 pages in your book only about 8 of those pages are in American anyway. i have my people call you people, we do lunch. and i see if you can because you do not have to order off thye internet i load mine from my C.D. rom when i ‘m out riding my bike there is nothing that can get me over that next hill like brides song, rattlesnake or flying down hill at 45 m.p.h. to 10,000 foot krutch, falls apart. kinda just gets me through the day.
sorry to go off topic but does anyone know who sings the song Without You that we did Sunday?
Samantha,
Without You is a Vineyard song…..g
Clay,
AAAHHHHHHH I see, that’s why I couldn’t make sense of those other 574 pages, thanks! ;)
Sorry, we’ve sidetracked this blog haven’t we?
I think I’m gonna have to ask for an ipod for my birthday, then I can catch upwith ya’ll on this blog…
Oh I forgot some favorites to mention… One of my favorites is Nicole Nordeman, I love to sing her songs in the jail. Several of the lady inmates said her words really spoke to their hearts, and I know the words do the same for me.
And why don’t we sing Strong Tower by Kutless in church? LOVE that one!
I miss singing Todd Agnew’s version of Amazing Grace. I also wish we could do his other one that I love oh my heavens I’m having a blond moment, what’s it called? It was a hit before Amazing Grace came out… This Fragile Breath, that’s it! Love that one!
Casting Crowns, that’s another group that has some songs that give me goosebumps every time.
Christa, If you look at the home page it quotes you saying “I love to sin…” I saw that and wondered what you were talking about. Thankfully that quote is missing the “g” on the end of “sin”. (laugh, ha,ha,ha)
LOL you are so right, that would get people’s attention wouldn’t it. ;)
I feel sad. I don’t have my MP3 player anymore! My husband confiscated it because he broke his!
:( But if I had it back, I would be changing it again! I am back on my broadway kick. So I would have my fave soundtracks on there! Miss Saigon, Wicked, Phantom of the Opera, etc
I have alot of Anthrax, Megadeth, Vio-Lence, Coroner, and even a little slayer and pantera on my mp3 player, as well as all of that other good old fashioned thrash metal. I also have alot of Zeppelin, AC/DC, Ted Nugent, and Alice Cooper. Hopefully nobody’s labeled me as a Jesus hating, Lucifer following music listener yet, as I have a a question on the morality of the vast majority of music in general.
Keeping in mind that ‘He who is not for Him is against Him: would make my music is in effect no more of a biblical ‘crime’ to listen to than jazz giants such as Sonny Rollins, Dizzy Gillespie, or Miles Davis, all of whom’s music generally does not contain lyrics. This would include classical pianists such as Haydn, or Mozart as well as countless others, who were devout Catholics throughout their lives.
The same is true for the Beatles (as I understand it, Pastor Dan Marks is a huge fan). This fabulous four has spawned such albums claiming to be bigger than Jesus, as well as songs essentially praising Hare Krishna, and some controversial lyrics possibly promoting drug use.
I’m curious as to Greg’s and others’ thoughts about musical groups that expose extremely secular VS. neutral messages. Are my listening habits to bands that clearly have no messages that are pro-Jesus and some which are blatantly against God (although when I come across them I DO delete them) more of an aurally committed sin than that of those who listen to other music that is not necessarily an opponent nor a proponent of the Word of God, such as some of these above mentioned artists : Eric Clapton, Andrew Loyd Webber’s Phantom of the Opera, Elvis, Johnny Cash, Stone Temple Pilots, etc… (all of whom I enjoy listening to by the way).
Another somewhat off topic thought, although I don’t know ALL the details on this: Saddleback Church hosting a political questionnaire? Sounds like a definite violation of church and state to me, which is A-Okay with me if they pay their due taxes and follow the appropriate laws.
Let me know your thoughts and God Bless!!
Oh a couple more things I wanted to mention… Jazz is amazing, including the artists I mentioned. I also wanted to acknowledge and give Greg props for being a truly insanely amazing guitar player, I want a C.D. of him doing nothing but shredding :)
J…. Garbage in garbage out. Your choice, your consequence. You are what you feed yourself. Fill your ears with uplifting God-glorifying music and you will reap the benefits of that. And so on…. I know Dan Marks well. He likes the Beatles music. But he loves Jesus first. That is evident to anyone who knows him. He is a songwriter and a Lover of Jesus and his WORD. To have appreciation of secular artists is not the same as embracing their life or entering into it. What you nourish yourself with will become very much a part of who you are.. The cool thing is, we all have a choice in who we choose to identify with. Although I know that many of the pieces bands like Megadeth put out there have a certain truthful tone to the times we live in, I can say without reservation that most of what you have listed here offers little in the way of hope and certainly not the ultimate hope found in Jesus, King of Kings. I guess it all comes down to what you value, and what you desire to offer to those around you.
You might be interested to know that Pastor Greg, in addition to being an amazing shredder, has a jazz side himself. He, Dan and a few others have hosted Jazz nights in our cafe. Some of the best I have heard. I am still waiting for that CD.
Hey J,
You’re no Jesus-hating, Lucifer follower. It sounds like you’re a Christian wrestling with gray area issues. Gray area issues are issues of conscience and (I would argue) issues of wisdom. Paul wrote, ‘All things are lawful for me, but (and this is a big but) not all things are beneficial.’ I certainly am not one who advocates for the Christian subculture (read my ‘Drink Milk from a Christian Cow’ post). God is the ultimate source of all good things-including the talents of Anthrax, Megadeth, Miles Davis and the rest. Though they don’t give glory to Him for their abilities, talents and music, you can. And you can pray for those boys (not Miles obviously-he died).
Here’s the wisdom part: You already edit songs that are blatantly anti-God, but perhaps you could pay attention to how a song/artist affects your emotional state and spiritual outlook. That’s what I pay attention to. I think that’s what Susan was getting at in her comment. What we think about and meditate on does have an impact upon our lives.
I’ve rambled a bit….thanks for the props-I love the jazz cats….and as to the Saddleback political involvement-they’re not endorsing any candidate-merely informing people. I think that keeps them safely in bounds as a tax-exempt organization….
peace, g
Oh.. the jazz cats…. please excuse my ignorance. You can kick me now.
Well I must say that my question still wasn’t quite answered as concretely as I would have hoped. Susan, I nourish myself with MUSIC, and quite honestly don’t pay much mind to lyrics. They are not godly bands but they have amazing music in my opinion. Unfortunately not many Christian artists offer what my selective tastes desire.
Garbage in, garbage out, and this applies to everything that is not of God. “All things are lawful for me, but not all things are beneficial” tells me that my listening habits as they stand are not sinful, yet it is in a way more beneficial to me as drinking soda, as some of the bands I listen to have a ‘truthful tone’ to it, as Susan so eloquently put it.
I’ve been raised in a family that would never let me listen to what I listen to now (due to their Christian faith), and it is quite liberating to know that it is not necessarily wrong of me, there are just more productive things I could be doing. Like Dan, I put Jesus above these bands, but I’ve always questioned the morality of listening to these bands, so I thought I’d pick apart a few more knowledgeable brains than my own for a second or in this case third opinion. Thank you.
Greg, no problem for the props you deserve them :)
J…
Couldn’t agree more. Thanks
I am unable to understand this post. But well some points are useful for me.
